Caring for your Emotional Health

We’re all feeling it. As the stay-at-home weeks drag on, we’re anxious to get back to life as we knew it before Coronavirus. We’re ready to have a meal in a restaurant with friends and family, go to a concert, go shopping, go to church, and so on. You might be dealing with extra stress, like trying to work at home, you may be homeschooling kids for the first time, or you or a loved one might be ill. During this time, it’s more important than ever to focus on our emotional and mental wellbeing. Here are some ways to find balance in this season.

Put Your Phone Down and Turn Off the TV

There’s a lot of information out there, and it’s easy to get caught up in it. Be aware of how much time you’re spending watching the news or perusing social media. This information overload can really take a toll on your emotional wellbeing. Consider setting a time limit.

Keep a Schedule

Make a list of your daily tasks. Then think about what times of the day you’re most productive, most creative, and when your energy levels are high and low. Write out a schedule, hang it up where you’ll see it, and be intentional about sticking to it. Set an alarm in the morning and go to bed at a consistent time.

Take Care of Your Body

Being stuck at home makes getting some exercise and eating well more challenging. Exercise increases endorphins and helps with your mood. There are lots of free resources out there right now – just search YouTube for what interests you.

Make Time for Fun

One of the few upsides about this season is that you may have some extra time on your hands. You finally have time to read that book, play an instrument, learn how to knit, do household DIY projects, do a puzzle, or whatever else brings you joy.

Connect with Others

You not only need it…but they do too! Reach out to friends and family via phone (gasp!) or video chat. Not much is better for your emotional wellbeing than chatting with a friend.
