Winterization Tips

With bad weather continuing to hit us from all angles, it’s not too late to take steps to guard your property against extreme weather. Here are a few steps that can assist you in preparing your home for extreme weather conditions.

  • Remove all hoses from the exterior hose bibs and install thermo hose bib covers to prevent freezing. If you have a hose bib that is leaking, have it repaired immediately.

  • Install foundation vent covers on all foundation vents.

  • In extreme weather conditions when temperatures drop into the teens or below zero, you should keep the cabinet doors open under the sinks to allow warm air to circulate. Keep a slow drip or slow stream of water flowing from the faucet. You will only need to do this in very extreme weather.

  • Check the weather-stripping around the exterior doors. Over time, the weather stripping can become damaged and less effective. If the weather stripping is damaged, have it replaced. This will help you stay warm and cut down on the heating bill.

  • If you have a pool, make sure to check with your pool vendor about what winterization may need to be performed.

  • Sprinkler systems should be cleared of water and shut down for winter.
