Oregon City is green, and one of the prettiest little cities within a stone’s throw of Portland, just 13 miles south of the big city. It’s only a short trip away from the Gorge, the Oregon Coast, Crater Lake, Mt. Hood, and the Columbia River. And who can miss the Willamette Falls downtown! It’s a powerful sight that may just inspire you to bike, hike, or kayak.
Oregon City is the county seat of Clackamas County, near the southern limits of the Portland Metro Area. It’s got great neighborhoods like the Canemah, Clackamas Heights, Beaver Creek, Clairmont Way, and so many others. There are many attractions to try in Oregon City like the Farmers Market on Saturdays, Museum of the Oregon Territory overlooking the Willamette Falls, Christopher Bridge Winery with a tasting room open to the public, and the Oregon City Municipal Elevator. This 130 feet high marvel was built in 1915 and modernized in 1955. Kids will love walking through the 35-foot long tunnel under the train tracks and then riding the elevator, zipping to the top in 15 seconds flat. This is free and a must-do in Oregon City.
The city also offers many delicious dining spots. Try Ingrid’s for Scandinavian food, Olympia Provisions Public House for tasty sandwiches, sausages, hotdogs, and beer; Nebbiolo for Italian and seafood; Coasters Crossing for traditional American fare, Srisiamchai for Thai food, and many more. When you’ve had enough of Oregon City’s fabulous food and need to get a little exercise, grab your bike, hike, or simply enjoy the parks and trails in and around the city. Canemah Bluff Natural Area offers great views of the river and has trails along the bluff. Clackamette Park is a 2 acre-park right on the river where Clackamas meets the Willamette. It’s a great park for kayaking, fishing, boating, and feeding the ducks.
