Honoring Service: TMG Cares Volunteers Transform Home of Navy Vietnam Veteran Michael Kartheu
February 15th, 2024 | TMG Cares volunteers recently rallied together at Operation Home Rescue's 13th project home, where Navy Vietnam veteran Michael Kartheu resides with his wife, Carolyn. The TMG Cares Volunteers' efforts not only revitalized his living space but also served as a poignant reminder of the power of collective kindness.
A Tribute to Service
Michael Kartheu, a veteran who served his country with honor, found himself in need of assistance with home maintenance. Recognizing his contributions and sacrifices, TMG Cares stepped in to offer a helping hand. Led by a spirit of service, four dedicated volunteers devoted a total of nine hours to improving Michael's home, demonstrating their commitment to giving back to those who have served our nation.
A Day of Transformation
The volunteers wasted no time getting to work, starting with weeding and yard work to rejuvenate the exterior of Michael's home. With meticulous care, they tackled overgrown areas, restoring order and beauty to the surroundings.
Next on the agenda was the essential task of cleaning gutters to ensure proper drainage and prevent potential damage to the property. Scaling ladders and armed with tools, the volunteers diligently cleared debris, leaving the gutters free-flowing and functional.
Addressing structural concerns, the team replaced the flashing on the chimney, enhancing both the safety and aesthetic appeal of the home. Their expertise and attention to detail ensured that the renovation was not only practical but also visually impactful.
Inside the home, the volunteers embarked on a series of upgrades to enhance comfort and accessibility for Michael. They replaced a worn-out shower insert, installing a new one to modernize the bathroom space. Additionally, a new shower head and grab bar were added, prioritizing safety and convenience for the homeowner.
As the final touch, the volunteers painted the ceiling, infusing the space with a fresh and vibrant ambiance. Their efforts culminated in a home transformed—a testament to the profound impact of collective goodwill and generosity.
A special thanks goes out to our generous community partners: Mr. Plywood and Jersey Mike's. Lunch was generously provided by a Vancouver area Jersey Mike's location, while funding generously donated by Mr.Plywood of Portland contributed to this and other Operation Home Rescue projects.

About Operation Home Rescue
Operation Home Rescue is a nonprofit organization that exists to assist veterans who live in Clark County, Washington who are physically or financially unable to carry out their home maintenance and/or repair needs. Participants in Operation Home Rescue can receive a variety of home maintenance services performed at no cost, such as landscaping, minor repairs, and cleaning. Operation Home Rescue is administered and funded by TMG Cares, the nonprofit division of the TMG Family of Companies, in partnership with the Clark County Veteran’s Assistance Center (CCVAC).
