From Scribbles to Smiles: TMG Cares Volunteers Repair Books for Children

TMG Cares Volunteers Partner with SMART Reading to Support Childhood Literacy

On April 28, 2025, seven incredible volunteers from TMG Cares, the nonprofit arm of The TMG Family of Companies, came together to support the inspiring mission of SMART Reading, which recently joined forces with the Children’s Book Bank. Their shared goal is a powerful one—to spark joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book, ensuring every child has the tools they need to thrive through reading.

Our team spent the day volunteering at the Book Bank, a vibrant hub where gently used children’s books are given a second chance. Over the course of 14 service hours, TMG Cares volunteers carefully inspected, cleaned, and restored well-loved books. Covers were wiped, pages were taped, scribbles erased, inscriptions covered, and spines reinforced—each book handled with care and prepared to find a new home with a child in the Portland metro area.

Swept Away by Stories

As the team worked, something unexpected and beautiful unfolded. Surrounded by classic stories and favorite characters, we found ourselves laughing, reminiscing, and swapping stories about the books that shaped our own childhoods. What started as a volunteer project quickly transformed into a celebration of reading—of the teachers who inspired us, the stories that stayed with us, and the joy books continue to bring.

Bringing Books Back to Life

By the end of the day, our team had lovingly restored 128 books, each one ready to be read and treasured once again. We also brought 45 picture books to donate—adding to the library of stories that will soon be in the hands of local children.

A Lasting Impact

Volunteering with SMART Reading reminded us that giving back doesn’t have to be complicated—sometimes, it’s as simple as restoring a book and sharing a story. TMG Cares is proud to support this important work and to help build brighter futures, one book at a time.
