Operation Home Rescue #18 Honors Late Veteran Gerald McCorkle

TMG Cares Volunteers Improve the Home of Betty McCorkle in Honor of Late Husband and Veteran Gerald McCorkle

Honoring a Hero: Operation Home Rescue for Gerald McCorkle

July 30, 2024  |  At TMG Cares, our mission is to give back to the community and honor those who have served our country. Recently, we had the privilege of organizing Operation Home Rescue in honor of the late veteran Gerald McCorkle. Gerald had applied for Operation Home Rescue but sadly passed away before his home rescue date. Our crew was honored to be able to offer the operation home rescue project opportunity to Gerald's surviving wife, Betty. This event brought together volunteers from the TMG Family of Companies to help improve the home that they shared for many years, ensuring it remains a beautiful and functional space for years to come.

A Labor of Love

The day was filled with various activities aimed at restoring and enhancing the McCorkles' home. Volunteers dedicated their time and energy to several key projects:

  • Trimming and Moving Rose Bushes: Several of the rose bushes, no longer supported by an old trellace that had recently been removed  had grown unruly. They were carefully trimmed and relocated to a new home, giving the garden a refreshed and manicured look.
  • Debris Disposal: A large pile of debris behind the shed was cleared out, making the backyard more spacious and tidy.
  • Window Cleaning: Volunteers cleaned both the interior and exterior of all windows.
  • Water Heater Repair: Restored functionality of the thermostat and replaced dip tube.
  • Pressure Washing: The front driveway and back patio received a thorough pressure wash, removing grime and moss and revealing their true beauty.
  • Walkway Gravel: Added gravel to areas as needed to level walkway leading up the side of the house.
  • Gutter Cleaning: Volunteers cleaned out and pressure washed the gutters, ensuring proper drainage and preventing potential water damage.
  • Weeding: An overgrown section of the yard was weeded, restoring order and beauty to the landscape.
  • Greenhouse Restoration: The greenhouse attached to the shed was revitalized with brand new sheets of clear plastic, making it both a more attractive and functional space for gardening.
  • Front Door Weather Stripping Repair: A member of the TMG Maintenance team fixed the weather stripping on the front door, ensuring a warm and cozy draft-free house this fall and winter.
  • Carpet Cleaning TMG Cares' community partner ColorBrite Carpet Cleaning took care of cleaning the carpets inside Betty's home.

A Community United

The success of this event was a testament to the power of community and teamwork. Volunteers from across the TMG Family of Companies came together, each bringing their unique skills and unyielding spirit of service. Working to fulfill the wishes of Betty McCorkle, the team made big improvements on the outside of the house that will be able to be enjoyed for years to come. Clearly ecstatic about the results, Betty was overjoyed with gratitude and deemed the volunteers "amazing" at the end of their day of service.

A Lasting Tribute

Operation Home Rescue was more than just a day of yard work; it was a heartfelt tribute to a veteran who dedicated his life to serving our nation. By improving the home Gerald McCorkle cherished, we hope to honor his memory and provide comfort to his family.

At TMG Cares, we believe in the importance of giving back and supporting those who have given so much. We are proud of the work done during Operation Home Rescue and are committed to continuing our efforts to make a positive impact in our community.
