The 10th Operation Home Rescue project home served Tony Fox who is a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Vietnam. He lives at the project home with his wife and child. It was important for Tony to have Operation Home Rescue work on his home when we did, because he is terminally ill and wants to make sure his family does not have to take care of minor repairs as his health declines. He comes from a military family, where all his brothers served as well as having a career military father.

Tony’s story is a heavy one to hear, but one that he tells openly. He experienced combat in Vietnam, and rescued POWs in Laos. He made it home alive after being shot and medevacked from the Philippines. His homecoming was an experience that still brings him to angry tears. As he returned to the United States in his uniform, he was met with protestors. Bags of flaming poop and slurs were hurled at him and his fellow service men. It is not until recently that Tony has heard the words ‘thank you for your service.’

Since returning from overseas, he has dealt with mental health issues, alcohol abuse, divorce, and thoughts of suicide. These are not uncommon issues for veterans, and Tony finds himself to be one of the lucky ones as he is still alive, has a family, and a home.

At Tony’s home, 3 TMG Maintenance team members were able to take care of repairs to minimize the burden of home maintenance for the family.

The repairs that were completed include:

  • Kitchen faucet replacement
  • Secured the dishwasher
  • Bathroom sink & vanity replacement
  • Reattached trim to the fireplace hearth & porch columns
  • Filled an entryway threshold gap
  • Applied moss treatment to the roof
  • Cleaned gutters
  • Reattached gutters to the home

We had 1 TMG staff volunteer who delivered the donated lunch from our Community Partner, Jimmy John’s. Our volunteer was able to take a tour of the project home and see what the program looks like in action. This is a newly incorporated volunteer position to assist the team onsite with a donated lunch!

Operation Home Rescue was honored to be invited into Tony’s life and home to assist with home maintenance and hear his story. The experience pulled on the heart strings a little harder than others, but Tony’s spirit and willingness to share his story was inspiring.
