A Meal From The Heart: TMG Cares’ Third Visit to the Ronald McDonald House

A Meal of Comfort and Connection Before Ronald McDonald House East Closes for Remodeling

As the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) East prepares for an extensive six-month remodel, it’s a time of both excitement and transition for the families who rely on its warmth and support. Starting today, RMH East will temporarily close its doors to undergo significant renovations, promising new kitchens, expanded space, and an even more welcoming environment for families navigating difficult times. During this transition, families will be relocated to nearby hotels and RMH South, ensuring they continue to receive the care and community they depend on.

Before the remodel began, TMG Cares Volunteers from The TMG Family of Companies had the honor of preparing and serving a heartfelt meal at RMH East, offering nourishment and comfort to families with children receiving care at Randall Children’s Hospital. It was a deeply moving experience for our team, reminding us of the strength and resilience these families embody each day.

The Wish Tree: A Symbol of Strength and Hope

Among the many meaningful aspects of RMH East is the Wish Tree, a powerful symbol of hope that captures the hearts of families staying there. Adorned with handwritten wishes, it stands as a testament to the love and perseverance of those facing life’s most challenging moments. Some wishes speak of healing and recovery, while others simply express gratitude for the support received. More than just a decoration, the tree serves as a beacon of unity and encouragement for all who pass through RMH’s doors.

A Helping Hand from Luis

Luis, our incredible staff liaison for the evening, ensured that the meal prep went smoothly, offering invaluable guidance along the way. He even shared a special cooking trick that made preparing one of the dishes easier— a small but much-appreciated gesture! Luis also gave us an inside look at the exciting remodel plans, which include six brand-new kitchens, more space for volunteers, and an environment designed to better accommodate the needs of families enduring difficult times.

Heartfelt Conversations and Unbreakable Bonds

One of the most touching aspects of the evening was the opportunity to connect with the families staying at RMH. Their stories were a poignant reminder of the challenges they face and the unwavering love that keeps them going.

One mother, who had been staying at RMH for six months while her baby remained in the NICU, shared that her stay would likely extend another six months. Her strength and perseverance were truly inspiring.

Another family had traveled from Medford, with an older sister and adult brother taking turns visiting their sibling who was receiving treatment. Their story illustrated the deep familial bonds that sustain them during these difficult times.

A Meal to Nourish the Body and Soul

As families gathered in the dining room, the atmosphere was one of warmth and togetherness. Others, after long and exhausting days at the hospital, were able to take leftovers from the dedicated “leftover” refrigerator— a small but impactful feature that ensures families always have access to a warm meal.

The night’s menu included black beans, cuban beef picadillo, seasoned rice, and corn. These dishes, filled with hearty flavors, brought a sense of comfort and relief to families who have been through so much. Seeing their smiles and hearing their words of gratitude was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

As RMH East embarks on this new chapter, we look forward to seeing its transformation and continuing to support the families who rely on its care. Until then, we cherish the memories TMG Cares made, the stories shared, and the bonds formed over a simple yet meaningful meal.

About Ronald McDonald House Charities

From RMHCOregon.com:

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon & SW Washington provides access to medical care, a home away from home, and a community of support for seriously ill or injured children and their families.

In 1984, after years of planning, the first Oregon Ronald McDonald House opened its doors to families in need.

Just steps away from OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children, that first House began providing comfort and relief to families needing to be close to their child’s hospital bed. Nearly four decades later, RMHC of Oregon & SW Washington has expanded from that first 17-room House into a statewide network of four Houses with 80 rooms and four in-hospital programs serving thousands of families every year.

At RMHC, we work every day to ensure families traveling for lifesaving or life-changing medical care can count on us, whenever, and wherever they need us.

Our dedicated staff, volunteers, and donors have made it possible for us to provide compassionate hospitality to more than 50,000 families since we first opened our doors in 1984. We are proud to say that we provide this vital resource at no cost to the families we serve, making it possible for them to focus on what matters most – each other.
