Operation Home Rescue #16 Honors Vietnam Army Veteran Glen Sheehan

TMG Cares Complete Their 16th Mission at the Home of Local Army Veteran Glenn Sheehan

June 11th and 12th, 2024 | A generous group of hard-working volunteers from the TMG Family of Companies, organized by TMG Cares, recently came together to make significant improvements to the home of Army and Vietnam Veteran Glenn Sheehan.

A Hero’s Background

Glenn Sheehan, born in Vancouver, WA, and raised in SE Portland, has a storied past that reflects his dedication and service to his country. Attending Centennial High School, Glenn was drafted at the age of 19 and served a year on the ground in Vietnam. He completed his basic training at Fort Ord in Monterey, California, and served in the Army from 1970 to 1974, serving in Jacksonville, Florida as well as Bermuda. His main duty was as a supply clerk in the office preparing paperwork for service to be completed on planes coming in for repair.

At our volunteers' visit, Glenn reflected on this time in his life, and how it was a difficult time that left a lasting impression on him. After he completed his honorable service in the military, Glenn spent 35 years as a long-haul truck driver, demonstrating the same commitment and perseverance he showed in his time in the military.

The Volunteer Effort

Glenn is proud to be a very skilled woodworker, however he admits that he is no longer able to complete the repairs on his home he'd like to due to health conditions. To help, TMG Cares mobilized a group of volunteers to address several pressing needs at Glenn’s home. Over two days, these volunteers worked cohesively on various projects, transforming areas on both the interior and exterior of the house.

Major Projects Completed

  • Fence Repair: A large section of fencing was repaired, significantly improving the security and aesthetics of the property. This project was made possible thanks to the generous donation of supplies by Rick's Custom Fencing and Decking.
  • Blackberry Removal: Community partner All American Tree and Landscape tackled overgrown blackberries that had reached over 6 feet tall, restoring order to the garden area.
  • Gutter Cleaning and Pressure Washing: The front porch and gutters received a thorough cleaning and pressure washing, revitalizing the home’s exterior and ensuring proper drainage.
  • Shed Repair: The volunteers repaired the shed, making it functional and safe once again.
  • Interior Repairs: Inside the home, walls were patched, and spots of damaged molding were replaced, contributing to a more comfortable and pleasant living environment for Glenn.

Community Support

This project was a true community effort, with several local businesses stepping up to support the cause. Special thanks go to:

  • Rick's Custom Fencing and Decking: For their generous donation of fencing supplies.
  • All American Tree and Landscape: For their invaluable help with the blackberry removal.
  • Mr. Plywood: For providing materials needed for the interior repairs.
  • Hooligan's Sports Bar and Grill: For keeping the volunteers fueled with lunch on both days of the project.

A Heartfelt Thank You

The transformation of Glenn Sheehan’s home shows what can be achieved when a community comes together with a common purpose. The TMG Cares volunteers, supported by generous local businesses, have made a lasting impact on a veteran’s life, ensuring he has a safe and comfortable place to call home.

As we celebrate this successful project, let us remember the importance of community and the power of collective action. Together, we can continue to make a difference, one home and one life at a time.
